It has really helped Annie to acclimate and feel secure and safe by arriving 15 minutes ahead of the start of class. She’s able to check the training center out completely – and sniff test. This she is able to do well before the arrival of the other dogs attending the class. Once they start arriving, Annie has thoroughly inspected the room and equipment and is able to process the incoming dogs.
The instructor adds one new piece of equipment for each class. The rest of the equipment stays the same. Although Annie has tried out everything before (minus the one new piece), she reacts as though she’s doing it for the first time. She gingerly approaches each piece of equipment in the course – and takes baby steps all the way through… having been coaxed on by a trail of tempting treats. The second time through the course gets a little better. Then, the third time’s the charm… her brain tells her it’s OK… it’s safe… it’s now familiar… and, off she goes through the entire course without a moment’s hesitation. And, back for a fourth smooth run!
