This magnificent autumn weather we are experiencing in western Massachusetts is doing wonders for my beloved senior dog James. The temperature is just right for him. Not the heat of summer, nor the cold of winter. It’s just to his liking.
I get such a thrill taking this boy for his morning walk. This morning, he was actually running ahead of me at a full gallop. I let him go out way ahead of me, his head held high, a huge smile on his face. I started running, too. Let’s go boy! I said. And, off we went, running together, full speed ahead. Pure joy for both of us. I love this dog! He’d go even further, but two miles really is enough. He does slow down part way home, takes a rest, then starts up again in a trot.
Whatever is ailing him… arthritis in his rear legs, his drooping right eye a possible sign of brain cancer, or simply old age (he’ll be 13 on 12/17/13), he’s making the most of his days. And, I am enjoying every precious moment I share with this very special dog.
