Lily never ceases to amaze me. She has trained hard for her role as a therapy dog and has come such a long way. This dog radiates joy in the presence of the children at the Westhampton Elementary School. I love to see her so happy. Her behavior is superb, exhibiting the good manners we have been working on in and out of class. When on the job, she’s not the wildly playful girl she is at home romping around with the other three dogs in our pack, nor is she in concentration mode as a huntress scouting for birds on the hillside. No, when Lily has her therapy dog vest on and she’s on the job as a Bright Spot Reading Buddy, she is a totally different dog. Working with children surely is her forte. They adore her and she soaks up all the attention they give her.
Now in our second month of the Bright Spot Reading-to-Dogs Program at the Westhampton Elementary School, Lily has her job down pat. She waits at the opening of the library for the first graders to walk in at 1:30. Each student gets to pet Lily on the head and say hello before finding their seat for the library lesson. Lily then heads over to the reading corner and settles into a comfortable position to listen to stories that two first graders, then two second graders will read to her that day. At the end of the day’s session with the second graders, Lily sits at the library door. Here, every second grader gets to say good-bye to Lily. Lots of hugs and kisses come her way. Lily’s tail is wagging from the time she walks in the school door ’til we leave for home. A very special time for both dog and children.
