Lily loves going to school every Tuesday to listen to first and second graders read her stories. I swear she knows when it’s Tuesday. Hurricane Sandy swept through our area of western Massachusetts, upending massive trees, overflowing streams, and knocking out power. This happening on the one-year anniversary of a freak snowstorm that left our area of the country paralyzed for weeks last October.
We were lucky this time – and extremely thankful. No trees fell here in our yard (I always worry about our fencing getting crushed) and we didn’t lose power. We know, though, that many folks in other areas not far from here are in bad shape. Our school district has been closed Monday and Tuesday. So, both Lilo, Monday’s Great Dane Reading Dog for the third graders and Lily, Tuesday’s Reading Dog for the first and second graders, stayed home. Sorry for those children scheduled to read to the dogs this week. They really look forward to it, selecting and preparing their book ahead of time. Sometimes they prepare two or three books, just in case there’s extra time. Lilo and Lily will be back at Westhampton Elementary School next week – weather permitting!
