King’s last reader of the morning was a new student at the school. She entered King’s office with a pile of books in her arms. Hi!, she greeted us, a huge smile on her face. She got down on the floor next to King and started petting him right away. I’m new at the school. I’ve been here only three weeks. I’ve never read to a dog before. We didn’t have dogs at the school I came from. I love dogs. This is so exciting. I brought a whole bunch of books with me. I wasn’t sure which books King would like, but I brought ones that have dogs in them.
I think King will like this one... and she started to read. All the while she read, she stroked King’s head and ears. She read with expression, pausing to show him the illustrations on the page. There, I think he really liked that book. On to a second book. This one, too, with a dog in the story. Again, she pet King all the while she read. Having finished the four books she brought, I told her she had a little time left. Can I stay and read to King a little longer? King always brings his book bag with him full of books on all reading levels, plus our Bright Spot Reading Buddy book series showcasing some of our other Reading Buddy Dogs. She selected the book about Reading Buddy Coco and began reading. I loved that book. Coco sounds like such a sweet dog. Time was then officially up and I told our new reader King needed to head home. She gathered her books, pet King on the head and said, This was so much fun. I love reading to a dog! I can’t wait to read to King again!
