A full class 0f eight + one (we took an extra team) started our Bright Spot therapy dog training yesterday.
Several breeds are represented in this group of dogs: Greyhound, Toy Poodle, Australian Labradoodle, German Shepherd, Lhasa Apso, and Dachshund. It’s nice to have a variety of sizes. Skills are different for small/toy breeds… they can sit on a person’s lap, and are often held by their handler.
The group will be taught the skills and techniques necessary to conduct meaningful therapy dog visits, will be exposed to working with children, as well as adults, and spend time in a nursing home to get on-site experience while being trained.
This will be the last class until September. Our trainers will take a summer break.
This class is being held at Animal Alliances on Damon Road in Northampton, Massachusetts, with Dawn Kimball as the instructor. Dawn reports that the group is very enthusiastic and eager to become involved with therapy dog work.
Our September class dates are posted on our website. Check it out, and sign up early. Our classes fill quickly.
