Lily’s story about the grapes has stirred the attention of many, including the children at the Westhampton Elementary School where Lily makes a weekly appearance as a Bright Spot Reading Buddy for first and second graders.
When Lily went to school on Tuesday, several of the children and teachers already knew about her story. They are followers of Say Hello Spot and had read about Lily and the grapes in my post. This generated lengthy discussion among both the first and second graders. We all sat together in a circle with Lily in the middle. They talked about people food not always good for pets. Some had heard about the dangers of dogs eating chocolate, dogs eating raisins. Some knew about the grapes. Some said they would go home and report this information to their parents and tell them to post the emergency hotline number in a convenient place and in their cell phones, too. The entire episode turned into a learning experience for the children.
Most of all, the children and teachers were so glad Lily pulled through and that she continues to join them every Tuesday afternoon for special reading time. Lily, post-episode, seems a calmer girl, very happy and content being surrounded by the love of these young children who enjoy taking turns reading to her.
