King has been listening to his kids read to him in pairs lately rather than one at a time. The children seem to enjoy the dynamic of the trio: kid-King-kid. Sometimes each of the kids reads his/her own book while King and the partner sit on large cushions on the floor and listen. Some choose a book (or two) to read together to King, each alternating pages.
This was the case with the boy and girl pictured above. With great enthusiasm they told King that they chose two special books they love to read to him. As the pair got settled on their large cushions, they invited King to snuggle in between them to follow along with the story. King, the first book is a story about two squirrels, announced the little girl. We know how much you like squirrels. With the word squirrels, King’s ears perked up and he studied the illustrations of the squirrels as girl, then boy, took turns reading. I was fascinated by the scene. King really gets excited when he sees squirrels on our walks, and he was showing the same excitement as the kids read the story, each turn of the page revealing another cute illustration of the squirrel characters in the book.
The little boy was delighted that there was still time left in their reading session to read Meet King and His Pals. This is my favorite book, the little boy said, and turning to King, he kissed him on the muzzle, put his arm around his neck and said, I love you King. Reading Buddy time is a magical time. I think King would like to spend every day at school with his kids.
