In spite of single digit temps and brisk winds, the dogs and I were eager to set out for our morning walks. The sunshine was pouring through the windows of the house luring us outside.
It was Annabelle’s turn to have her two mile walk first. I felt a shortened version would be in order due to the conditions – perhaps just one mile. Well, we didn’t get farther than our next door neighbor’s driveway when I noticed that Annie was walking on three legs, holding the fourth up to avoid touching the way-to-cold pavement. With each step, she alternated legs. I immediately turned back. She looked up at me with a worried look on her face. She seemed to be saying, How can I get home? Too heavy to carry, the alternative was to run back to the house as quickly as we could. For any of my dogs to cut a walk short, it had to be mighty cold under foot.
The rest of the day was spent with all four dogs (Violet not in photo) lying by the fire, taking just five-minute outings to do their business. We’re expecting worse conditions tomorrow and Thursday. I need to get some fresh marrow bones from the butcher to keep the gang occupied!
