The Bright Spot Canine Reading Buddies Program at The Westhampton Elementary School has expanded to include Pre-Schoolers, as well as first, second, third, and fourth graders. Fifth graders will soon be added. The Program has been embraced by both students and staff, alike. A love of reading is thriving!
When the Pre-School class entered the library today, they were greeted by Canine Reading Buddies Tucker and Lilo, two Great Danes, handled by their companion Ern Damon. The Class consists of six young children. Each had a picture book to share with the dogs.
Their teacher modeled how to show the dogs their books and tell in their own words what the picture is showing. Ern was amazed that six children that young could sit patiently waiting to be called on to turn their page and tell Lilo and Tucker something about their picture and story. Ern observed, as well, that Lilo and Tucker were both paying real attention to the children and to the books. The perfect Canine Reading Buddies!
